A breathtaking sight
Viewed from boardwalks first built in 1877 and fully renovated in 1987, the Gorges du Durnand are a breathtaking sight, ranking among Europe’s most beautiful gorges.
In the municipality of Bovernier, the visible part of the Gorges du Durnand extends for about a kilometre. It’s reached by an idyllic path, lined with wild blueberries and strawberries, which suddenly turns into a series of suspended wooden walkways and staircases (330 steps in total) giving fairytale views.
Below your feet, the Durnand gushes and swirls over a succession of 14 waterfalls, each more impressive than the last. As the foaming river plummets downwards, the sky is no more than a thin blue strip above dark cliffs.
Allow about an hour for the walk out and back along a little path through the forest
